A Life of Love: my journey as a mother and caregiver – by Kim

Motherhood has been the most profound journey of my life—a journey of love, resilience, and unwavering dedication. From the moment I became a mother, I knew that my role would be one of fierce protection and boundless care. But nothing could have prepared me for the path that lay ahead. Losing my mum at just 11 years old shaped me in ways I never fully understood until I became a mother myself. In her absence, I stepped into a caregiver role far earlier than most, looking after my younger brothers and supporting my dad while still being a child myself. That experience instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility, compassion, and strength—qualities that have carried me through every challenge in my adult life.

My youngest son was born with Down syndrome, and his first year was a whirlwind of hospital stays, oxygen dependency, and countless medical appointments. Every day was a battle, but giving up was never an option. I became his advocate, his voice, his unwavering support. At the same time, my eldest son is navigating his own challenges, and the ND system, awaiting his diagnosis for ADHD and ASD. Balancing their unique needs, ensuring they feel loved, supported, and empowered, has become my life’s purpose.

Caring for my boys was instinctual, but my journey as a caregiver didn’t stop there. When my dad needed an operation that could have left him unable to care for himself, I moved back home, taking on the role of his caregiver while still being the mother my sons needed. It wasn’t easy juggling it all, but love has a way of pushing you forward, no matter how heavy the load.

Through it all, I realized the importance of community. Parenting a child with additional needs can feel isolating, and I never wanted another parent to feel the loneliness I had experienced. That’s why I helped establish a parent carer support group—to provide a space where others could find understanding, strength, and connection. No one should have to face their struggles alone.

Being a mother and a caregiver has defined my life, but I don’t see it as a sacrifice—I see it as a privilege. The love I give to my children, my family, and my community is the legacy I hope to leave behind. Because at the heart of everything I do is one simple truth: love makes all things possible.
